Though he’s notorious worldwide for encouraging the extrajudicial killings of suspected drug dealers, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte showed his softer side at the ASEAN summit this weekend, when he sang a Filipino love song for U.S. President Donald Trump.
The Duterte-Trump bromance was on full display at the summit hosted by Duterte, even as human rights groups called for Trump to publicly criticize the Filipino leader’s crackdown on suspected drug dealers and users. Duterte has bragged in the past about killing drug dealers himself.
Duterte took to the stage alongside singer Pilita Corrales at the ASEAN gala on Sunday, joining her in singing a popular love song. Afterwards, he explained that he jumped in “upon the orders of the commander-in-chief of the United States.” The comment drew laughter from the crowd and a smile from Trump.
The song, called “Ikaw,” is about someone who’s waited a long time for their beloved to arrive.
“You are the love that I’m waiting for, my heart has grieved for so long, but you are here now,” one translation of the lyrics says.
