A Piece of Meghan Markle’s Hollywood History Is For Sale - Vanity Fair

When Hollywood’s memorabilia collectors log on to bid in Profiles in History’s “Hollywood: A Collectors Ransom” auction next Tuesday, they’ll be able to buy pieces of monumental moments in film history: David O. Selznick’s script and production notes from Gone With the Wind; one of the dresses Judy Garland wore on the set of The Wizard of Oz; and the Freddy and Jason costumes from Freddy Vs. Jason, for example. But on lot on the docket isn’t necessarily valuable because of where it was used, but for what happened to the person after they used it. Next week, the suitcase that Meghan Markle once held on the show Deal or No Deal is up for sale.

In 2006, Meghan took a job as a suitcase holder for the game show, and sported number 24 for the whole second season. In a 2013 Esquire interview, Meghan was eager to change the subject when asked about that job. “I would put that in the category of things I was doing while I was auditioning to try to make ends meet,” she said. “I went from working in the U.S. Embassy in Argentina to ending up on Deal.” She added that she didn’t have the winning case, so she spent a lot of time waiting around. “I would end up standing up there forever in these terribly uncomfortable and inexpensive five-inch heels just waiting for someone to pick my number so I could go and sit down.”

According to Profiles in History, the suitcase is aluminum and featured chrome handles and a crushed red velvet lining. The auction notes point out a coincidence about the suitcase. When Donald Trump had a role as a guest advisor on the show’s first season, he told a contestant to choose that suitcase. (An Austrian model named Nancy Stelle likely would have been holding the case at that time.)

The most valuable movie memorabilia of all time—including the titular Maltese Falcon, Garland’s ruby red slippers, and the James Bond Aston Martin—have gone for millions of dollars in past auctions; some have even inspired both scandal and a vibrant secondary market. Profiles in History estimates that bidding on the suitcase will begin and $4,000-$6,000. Considering the trajectories of the two people most associated with it, if a rich person is desperately in need of some good luck, that could be a downright steal.
