Legal hurdles may make Weinstein's prosecution an exception

LOS ANGELES -- Harvey Weinstein's arrest is a landmark moment in the #MeToo movement.

Yet as authorities work through dozens of similar cases against famous figures in entertainment, legal hurdles may make such prosecutions the exception.

The next round of charges could come against Weinstein himself, as prosecutors in Los Angeles and London could follow New York, where Weinstein pleaded not guilty Friday.

Kevin Spacey and Mario Batali are among those remain under investigation.

But because so many .MeToo cases involve women who have come forward after years of silence, statutes of limitations have made prosecutions impossible.

Los Angeles police have rejected cases against director James Toback and a new allegation against director Roman Polanski because they were too old, and many similar rejections are likely in the coming months.
