'Love Wins' concert linked to Bruce McArthur case postponed after criticism

TORONTO - A event billed as a "part vigil, part celebration" in the wake of the arrest of alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur has been postponed after members of Toronto's LGBTQ community called it tone-deaf.

The free event was set to take place on March 29 with a lineup that included Carole Pope and members of the Barenaked Ladies.

The poster advertising the event did not mention McArthur by name but referenced "the series of killings that have rocked Toronto's LGBTQ community."

A release on Toronto Coun. Kristyn Wong-Tam's website said city staff will work with community members to ensure that future plans address all concerns.

The statement from event organizers added that the event had caused divisions amongst LGBTQ people in what it called a historic time for the community.

Some community members said the concert, called #LoveWins, was too celebratory in a time when police are still investigating the deaths and disappearances.

The statement apologized to the talent and organizers involved with the event for the change of plans.

McArthur is facing six charges of first-degree murder in relation to the deaths and disappearances of men with ties to the community.
