Young, Cockburn inducted into Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame

TORONTO - Legendary artists Neil Young and Bruce Cockburn were inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame on Saturday.

The live concert and ceremony was held at Toronto's Massey Hall.

The 71-year old Young told the crowd he was "terribly proud to be Canadian," as he was inducted.

Cockburn, who's 72, thanked his long-time manager Bernie Finkelstein, saying "In a world increasingly defined its by fakery, we together have pulled off the greatest trick ever -- we spread truth."

Among the highlights of the night was singer k.d. lang whose heart-wrenching take on Young's "Helpless" earned her a standing ovation.

Quebecois inductees were Beau Dommage, a group formed in the early 1970s that became known for writing popular French folk staples.

Rounding out the group was Expo '67 theme writer Stephane Venne whose songwriting career was launched when he penned the winning song.
