'True Detective' eyes Mahershala Ali for third season

Crime thriller "True Detective" is looking to recruit 2017's Oscar-winning Mahershala Ali for a place among its Season 3 cast, according to a new report.

After four seasons on "House of Cards" and a seven-episode run on board Marvel's "Luke Cage," Mahershala Ali has been approached by HBO to star in the third season of "True Detective."

Mahershala Ali won 2017's Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor following his turn in "Moonlight," which went on to become surprise Best Picture winner at the end of the night.

Now his involvement in "True Detective" is thought to become instrumental in getting a third season greenlit, reports Deadline.

Having appeared in "Predators," "The Place Beyond the Pines," "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay" and "Hidden Figures" during his rapid rise to fame, Ali is already committed to Roxanne Shante rap biopic "Roxanne Roxanne," which could be made available later in 2017 after a Sundance premiere in January, and Robert Rodriguez's sci-fi manga adaptation "Alita: Battle Angel," set for July 2018.

The first season of "True Detective," which further established director Cary Joji Fukunaga and creator Nic Pizzolatto, had a resurgent Matthew McConaughey, the "Hunger Games"' Woody Harrelson, and Michelle Monaghan as its leads.

It was recognized with four Primetime Emmys, two Writers Guild accolades and a BAFTA, as well as four nominations at the Golden Globes.

Season 2, though it did not hit the heights of its predecessor, was led by Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch, Kelly Reilly, and Vince Vaughn.

Pizzolatto remained on board for that, and has been joined by David Milch of "Deadwood" and "NYPD Blue" during pre-production work on Season 3.
