'I hit the jackpot': 76-year-old contest winner on walking the MMVA carpet

Kate Gillies, 76, is a self-described “contest junkie” who enters her name in multiple online contests every week.

So when she won a trip to Toronto to attend the iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards last weekend, she felt like she “hit the jackpot.”

Gillies and her friend of 48 years, Doris MacKenzie, travelled from the Maritimes to strut their stuff on the MMVA pink carpet on Sunday and mingle with the stars.

The two women told CTV’s Your Morning on Wednesday that it was one of the best experiences they’ve shared over the decades.

“(It rates) right up there,” Gillies said. “I would say probably number one.”

“It was great, it was wonderful,” MacKenzie added.  She said her favourite part of the night was interacting with all the people responsible for running the MMVAs, who were “so good to us.”

The two friends danced down the pink carpet ahead of the show and interviewed Lilly Singh, a Canadian YouTube star who was one of the MMVA presenters.

After the show, MacKenzie said she wanted to keep dancing, but couldn’t find the girls who had invited her to the MMVA after party.
