Edmonton shop owner auctions off Britney Spears costume collection

Ever since Dana Proctor opened her swimwear store, Surfco, in West Edmonton Mall in 1999, the Britney Spears superfan has been hitting online auctions to amass some of the superstar’s most recognizable – and midriff-baring -- onstage outfits.

Now, Surfco owner Dana Proctor is looking to part ways with her cherished collection, by auctioning off the outfits for a total of US$1 million.

It all started in 2003, when Proctor acquired the costume Spears wore to perform “I'm a Slave 4 U” at the 2001 Video Music Awards.

Proctor then picked up the matching outfit that the singer wore in her music video. The store owner says the outfits have become as iconic as the star who wore them.

“These are the costumes of some of her most important moments of her career and I don’t think they belong in my house,” Proctor told CTV Edmonton.

Filling out her Britney collection are seven outfits, including the pants she wore at her Super Bowl halftime show performance in 2001, and another number that she wore in the “Me Against the Music” video with Madonna.

The eBay auction ends on Friday. As of Tuesday morning, bidding had reached nearly US$100,000 for all seven costumes.

The costumes are in the store window at Surfco, which is the first time they’ve been displayed publicly.

“I did have them on these mannequins at my home, and so my friends would come over and we’d all sit and look at them and just admire the detail and the creations that they are,” Proctor said.
