At a young age, many aspiring writers dream of becoming private investigators; perhaps like you, I was one of these. Over the years, however, my childish dream became a solid, concrete prospect for the future. It took the form of an elaborate vision in which, at 65, I would be just like Diane Keaton in Manhattan Murder Mystery: happily married to Woody Allen, I can already see myself instill in my man the doubt that our neighbor has been killed by her respective husband. Woody accuses me of reading too many detective novels, but in the very end, the doubt assails him and our secret investigation begins -- along with a second phase, the most romantic and serene one, of our troubled marriage.
Since I still have 40 years in front of me without any murder nor mystery to solve, in the meantime, I keep saying to myself, thank God Nic Pizzolatto wrote and created True Detective. The striking, original HBO anthology series which, during its first season, gave us everything we wanted to see in a crime drama/neo-noir; as well as eight one-hour episodes that, along with the script, cinematography, and opening theme, made us fall deeply in love with its two unforgettable male protagonists -- maybe just helped a little by the fact that both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are terribly sexy actors.
Nonetheless, with the second season officially scheduled to premiere on June 21, and an entire new cast which includes Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdam as the next "true detectives," my feminist part in me has already begun to imagine a third season consisting of two female detectives. Because there is no point in denying it: for how happy we are to have Rachel in -- especially with her short hair, leather jacket, and the gun -- one woman detective seems no longer enough. After that even Michelle Monaghan has been relegated to the role of yet another object of sexual desire of two different men during the first season, we want True Detective 3 to be more courageous and innovative in its future casting choices.
With this in mind, here I am pitching five female duos who stood out in recent times. (... Pizzolatto, if you're reading this, do not disappoint us and please, immediately start contacting them for the role of protagonists in the third season. PS: Know that we love you anyway!)
Anne Hathaway & Emily Blunt
Nine years after The Devil Wears Prada, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt were back together for the hilarious Lip Sync Battle on April 9. Anne may have won the battle, but Emily has fared very well until the end. And the two undeniably form one of the most tough, funny, and iridescent pairs of actresses around.
Ellen Page & Evan Rachel Wood
Twitter active users may already know that these two look like great friends on the social network. Independent cinema lovers, however, may also have learned that Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Wood have recently finished filming Into the Forest, a sci-fi drama in which two young women struggle with an apocalyptic guerrilla. In any case, both Ellen and Evan would know how to do their "dirty" detective job like few other actresses in Hollywood.
Reese Witherspoon & Sofia Vergara
A few weeks before Hot Pursuit hits the screen, we can say it for sure: Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara know how to complement each other with their obvious physical and behavioral differences. And if with Wild Reese has once again proven to be a great actress, Sofia could bring a little healthy, lively dose of humor in this promising pair of detectives.
Eva Green & Rosario Dawson
After Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, it is reasonably hard to think of another pair of actresses who can bring to the table so much beauty and toughness all in a single shot. Because only Eva Green and Rosario Dawson would know how to be just as 'beautiful and harsh' as two decent "true detectives."
Chloe Sevigny & Jena Malone
Chloë Sevigny and Jena Malone are the kind of actresses which one learns to know, love, and respect over time. Both have starred in a slew of considerable independent and mainstream films. In The Wait, they have even shared the screen while playing two sisters. Therefore, if you are looking for some extremely talented actresses, Nic, you can find them in Chloë and Jena without any doubt.
